Discovery Education

Discover edit

Discovery have a dedicated team that work their way through their back catalogue of programming to find clips that can be used in UK schools to help teach curriculum subjects to primary and secondary students. The online packages that a school can subscribe to are extensively supported by written material for the class teacher – lesson plans, activities, guides, debates and questions to inspire learning in conjunction with the online video clips.

My job is to edit the supporting documents so that they are accurate, grammatically correct, consistently styled and presented and produced according to a comprehensive style guide. You can find a reference to support my contribution to Discovery here.

Whisky Magazine 126

Based in Norwich, Paragraph Publishing has asked me to proof their long-running Whisky Magazine, which comes out eight times a year. Using Acrobat Pro and working on PDFs over two days I marked up areas that needed attention and then emailed the spreads back to the managing editor, who took  in my corrections. I don’t recall the word count for this edition but it took 2.5 days to complete.

Hopefully this is the start of an ongoing relationship with Paragraph Publishing – I have already completed two books for them and look forward to the next edition of their magazine, which will be edition number 128!

How the Brain Works

How the Brain Works

It was a nice surprise to have this land on my desk, as the content of this book is from a magazine, Inside the Human Body, that I used to edit in the 1990s. Featuring the text and illustrations that I originally commissioned (plus a few photos that I took myself), the section of the magazine that dealt with the function and physiology of the brain has now been repackaged as a stand-alone book: How the Brain Works.

This change in format meant that text had been reflowed, occasionally getting a bit mangled in the process, and the captions and annotations were also sometimes mixed up. I checked the proofs, correcting errors and typos where they occurred, getting the publication ready for printing. As I understand it, How the Brain Works will be on sale in the spring of 2015.
